The Miseducation of Womb Wellness

It could all be so simple, but the miseducation of the womb  makes it so hard. For most people with vaginas, talking about our vaginas is taboo and it's a complex system unique to every individual. Also,  seeing an obgyn to figure out the inner workings of our yoni can be a great or awkward moment.  However,  taking pride in learning about taking care of our vaginas is an essential part of our overall health. Queen Afua, author of Sacred Woman: A Guide to Healing the Feminine Body, Mind, and Spirit,  speaks of the ancestral healing of our feminine bodies. And as for  me this has helped me rediscover the physical and spiritual importance of healing my own womb for the betterment of my overall health. If you're looking to get started on your healing journey there are a couple of things that you should know as you embark on your vaginal self- care journey.

1. Do your own research

Instead of being misguided, get educated on your own body.  Begin your search with a list of names and websites  to find the perfect obgyn for you ! Look for real reviews from  real people that have similar conditions to you. Also, visit websites like Healthgrades, ZocDoc, or Vitals to see ratings and reviews on the doctor of your choice. Whether you choose a male or female doctor or one that fits your insurance plan, it's mainly important to choose an obgyn that caters to your exact medical needs. Everybody is different and that’s why finding the right  obgyn has the power to improve your health for the better.

2. Seek a therapist

In some cases your mental health can be directly related to your vaginal health. Did you know that some studies  suggest that the vaginal condition called “vulvodynia” is linked to autoimmune disorders, nerve damage, chronic yeast infections, and the condition is more visible in those who suffer from depression and anxiety. According to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, “vulvodynia” is defined as vulva pain that lasts three months or longer, and is not caused by any infection, skin disorder, or any other medical issue. This condition can occur mainly after you have finished having sex or urinate and if left untreated can result in chronic pain. Going to the right health care provider can help you get the medication and or mental health treatment necessary to cure your condition.

3. Practice Yoni Self -Care

Although everyones vagina is made different there are still certain products and habits that can  be avoided for all people with vaginas. First things first avoid wearing tight panties as it restricts airflow to your genital area. In fact sleeping naked (meaning no panties included) is actually better for your genital health. Use Epsom salts and oatmeal baths with warm water to soothe any vaginal pain. Make sure to pat to dry and use cold compresses and gel packs. Try a DIY vaginal steamer for cleansing. This method is an age-old natural remedy said to cleanse the vagina and uterus, regulate menstruation, and ease period cramps and bloating. Wash your vagina gently preferably with perfume and dye free soaps and plain water. Lastly apply a natural emollient around your vagina instead of cream like petroleum jelly because it acts as a protective barrier for your vagina.

4. Take Care Of Your Sexual Health

If you're sexually active use water based lubricants instead of oil based lubricants as it's less likely to break down condoms. Some people are sensitive to latex condoms so if you notice any irritability switch to hypoallergenic condoms. Make sure to talk to your partner about their sexual health history and get tested every 6 months. Protects your vagina from sexually transmitted diseases keeping up with all of your sexual health appointments.

As a reminder your choice of resources, practices and especially your health care provider is  important for your overall health. Keep in mind that this is your choice. Don’t be afraid to ask the questions that are necessary to improve your overall health. Pu**y  is power so remember to take good care of her.
