5 Ways To Avoid Burnout While Chasing The Bag

Today more than ever, there’s been a rise in women getting their grind and hustle on.

Also known as “chasing the bag”, making more money can be in various forms such as having a side gig, a promotion at a present job, or obtaining a higher-paying job. Although more women are handling their business in finance, there’s also been an uprise in this pesky downside: burnout. Working twice as hard in anything, especially with jobs, can definitely start to take its toll with one’s wellness and mental health.

We here at ABJ want to provide support and guidance for every gyal boss out there chasing that bag. Yet at the same time continuously maintain their mental health and well-being to avoid burnouts occurring as often. Here are five practices below to do just that:

1 - Schedule a daily, uninterrupted moment of me time  

Having a much-needed moment to yourself doesn’t have to be over-the-top or doing something elaborate. It involves doing anything to unwind, de-stress, and become more centered. Exercising or just moving your body, playing a musical instrument, or making a simple meal are just several great activities to achieve the above.

Additionally, it doesn’t matter how long this me time ends up lasting. It can be as long as 1 hour or as short as 10 minutes. Once you’re done having your special time, you’ll be able to have enough clarity, more peace of mind, and less burnout in order to go back to chasing the bag. Perhaps even coming up with new ideas on how to do so. 

2 - Practice meditative techniques that personally suit you

Partaking in meditating doesn’t have to just be about doing deep-breathing exercises. Although it can be immensely helpful and calms down the entire body. However, there are additional unique and alternative practices that may suit you best and make you want to keep at it. Examples may include journaling, saying self-affirmations out loud, or sitting calm and quietly. 

There’s no such thing as a right or one way to meditate. As cliche as this sounds, doing this is all about reaching your destination to inner peace than the actual journey taken. Especially when it comes to chasing the bag, dealing with burnout and stress will eventually dissipate in that moment. This ends up resulting in going harder and lighting up that fire inside to stack more paper.

3 - Take social media breaks aka “cleanses”, if and when needed -  

If you’re on social media, it can be very easy to get caught up in the moment comparing your life and bag-chasing endeavors to others. Even to the point where it becomes inevitable, and you start to doubt and feel down on yourself, eventually leading to burnout. This feeling of social media overload and the pressures associated with it couldn’t be any more normal to experience. And once you’ve reached that breaking point, disabling all your social media accounts and taking a well-deserved pause, will definitely do you some good.

Cleansing from social media by taking a pause can help you regain more clarity. Not with just making more money but in all aspects of your life as well. In between that time, you’ll realize that you have more time for yourself to decompress. This may involve taking a nice, hot bubble bath with some scented lit candles, doing something artistic such as drawing, or cracking open a fresh, new book you’ve been dying to read. 

Forgoing social media will eventually make you see the bigger picture in how to go about chasing the bag. Subsequently, on your own pace and terms. So once you do decide to hop on that saddle again, you can incorporate that mindset, ultimately leading to little or no more burnouts. 

4 - Find a healthy outlet that comes naturally WHILE disconnecting from phones, social media, and TV -  

With the exception of playing background music as an option, having a healthy outlet that doesn’t involve alcohol consumption or substances can help relieve stress and burnout, in surprising ways. These outlets may include but aren’t limited to: cooking, baking, crocheting, knitting, creative writing, or completing a jigsaw puzzle. You may even discover a new talent as an outlet in the process.

Having a healthy outlet, creative or not, can make your body, mind, and overall self reset entirely. Furthermore, it can make you feel more confident once you’re done for the day going at it. As for how this relates to chasing the bag, having an outlet that suits you best can become immensely soothing. Very soon this can result in feeling less pressure along with obtaining a new outlook and perspective regarding making more money. And this time with full gusto.  

5 - After self-decompressing, plan inexpensive hangouts with others -  

Chasing the bag while doing your best to avoid burnout doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice having a social life. Us gyals can still let loose yet still continue to have hustling as an agenda in our lives. Yet at the same time not depleting our funds when playing harder after working hard. 

Just like scheduling daily, uninterrupted personal time, hanging out with others doesn’t have to be well thought-out or extravagant. Activities can be as simple as catching up at a cafe or any establishment with no table service, local festivals and farmers markets, free public events, picnics, taking a scenic walk, or playing board games. 

Decompressing in this way by letting off some steam with other people helps to avoid burnout because you’re focusing your attention on others besides yourself. We can get so caught up in our own lives that it can become a breath of fresh air to care for others just as much. Not only does that help you get back to chasing the bag with more momentum in return, but also for every sis you hang out with, who’s also trying to avoid burnout while chasing the bag.
